Strategic Planning Made Simple: A 4-Step Process for Your Business or Life

This week, I’m stepping back from the day-to-day grind and leaning into something that’s easy to put off—but incredibly powerful when done right: strategic planning.
At the Chamber, our Board of Directors is gathering for a strategic planning session. It’s something I’ve always valued in leadership roles—whether I was serving as mayor, launching a new training program, or charting a new path for the Rohs Opera House. Taking time to plan with purpose has consistently helped me move from idea to action—and from action to actual results.
But let’s be honest: most people either skip strategic planning altogether or make it so complicated they abandon it halfway through. So today’s blog breaks it down into four simple steps that you can use for your business, your team, or even your personal life.
Let’s get strategic—without needing a 3-day retreat or a whiteboard the size of a billboard.
Step 1: Start with Your Mission (Your WHY you do what you do)
Your mission is your foundation. It answers the question:“Why do we exist?”
It’s not a slogan or a pitch—it’s a guiding belief that fuels your work and inspires others to join you.
For example, the mission of the Cynthiana-Harrison County Chamber of Commerce is:
To advance greater Harrison County by being a catalyst of growth and development for our business community.
That statement keeps us focused. It’s why we host training events, connect members, send newsletters, and advocate for downtown development.
Your Turn:Write a simple, clear statement that captures why your business (or life mission) matters. Keep it short enough to remember, but powerful enough to motivate.
Step 2: Set Your Strategy & Goals (Your WHAT you do)
Now that you know why you do what you do, it’s time to define what you want to accomplish.
This is where goals come into play. These should be clear, measurable, and rooted in your mission.
For the Chamber this year, one of our goals was to grow membership—and we met our yearly target in the first six months! Now, we’re setting new stretch goals focused on engagement, business support, and community-building.
Your Turn:Identify 3–5 key goals that you want to hit over the next 6–12 months. Think about what success looks like specifically. What would make this year a win for you?
Step 3: Choose Your Tactics (Your HOW you do it)
Now it’s time to get practical. Tactics are the specific actions you take to reach your goals. I've heard it said that a goal without a plan is just a dream.
If your strategy is your destination, then your tactics are the vehicle. They answer the question:“How will we get there?”
Let’s say your goal is to increase foot traffic to your shop. Tactics might include:
Hosting an in-store event
Launching a loyalty card
Partnering with another local business for a giveaway
When we took over the Rohs Opera House 19 years ago, one of our strategies we developed was to make the theater more than just a movie house. Our tactics included adding ghost tours, live music, historical walking tours, and community events—all rooted in our mission to be an entertainment anchor for downtown Cynthiana.
Your Turn:List out a few tactics under each goal. Keep them specific and doable. Don’t worry about being fancy—this is about what works.
Step 4: Build the Plan (Your WHO does it & WHEN)
Now that you have a map, it’s time to follow it.
Your plan puts your tactics on a timeline with deadlines, assignments, and action steps. This is where execution happens.
At the Chamber, this might mean mapping out an event calendar, assigning tasks to board members, or scheduling emails and campaigns. For you, it might mean creating a 90-day action plan, setting reminders, or blocking off time on your calendar to work the plan.
Your Turn:Start small. For each goal, assign a task, pick a deadline, and decide who’s responsible (even if it’s just you). Don’t let your plan live in your head—put it somewhere visible and revisit it often.
In Summary…
You don’t need a 50-page binder or a management consultant to create a plan that works. You just need a little time, a little clarity, and a whole lot of follow-through.
Here’s the simplified formula:
Mission (Why) → Strategy/Goals (What) → Tactics (How) → Plan (Who/When)= Results (Boom 💥)
